ESY Portfolio — Purpose and Components

Source email: "ESY Portfolio" — Shannon Flaherty, 2023-06-05 Status caveat: This email is from 2023. The general philosophy ("bridge between SY and ESY teams") is unlikely to change, but specific submission logistics (who uploads to OCTO, due dates) almost certainly do — re-confirm timing each spring.

Purpose

"At its core, the purpose of the ESY Portfolio is to create a bridge between the team supporting a student during the SY and the team supporting the student during ESY."

ESY services help a student maintain critical skills where teams identified a high level of concern around both regression and recoupment.

The framing question:

"What would someone need to hit the ground running to help this student maintain on these skills over the summer?"

You do NOT need to create new materials

Shannon was emphatic about this:

"You do NOT need to create or develop new materials. It is not necessary to create new work for the goal(s) you have selected for ESY. The student can work on the same content that you identified during the SY in order to maintain over the summer break."

Required portfolio components

Component What to include
Student Context Hobbies, interests, motivations
Student Strengths Areas where the student is strong
Behavior Tracker Sample, if the student uses one
ESY Portfolio Materials Vary by goal type — see academic-goal options below

Academic-goal material options (any combination)

Format and length

"You do not need to make your responses lengthy. Stick to the basics of what will be helpful for someone working with the kids this summer to know."

Submission

In 2023: Send to Shannon via email or Word doc by end of day Friday before the OCTO upload deadline (she handled OCTO upload for the team).

This logistic almost certainly changes year-to-year — re-confirm submission method and deadline each spring.

Annual window

ESY portfolios are due in late spring (May/June) — well before ESY begins in summer.
